Town Challenge Bike Series Continue

The third of eight Steamboat Springs Town Challenge Mountain Bike Series events will bring local racers back up the steeps of Howelsen Hill and lower Emerald Mountain.more>The Howelsen Hill Summer Sizzler Cross-Country race is tonight, starting a the base of Howelsen Hill.

Town Challenge race director Gretchen Sehler said the race should provide a tour of the trails crisscrossing Howelsen Hill and Emerald Mountain “from one end to the other.”

“It kind of goes up, down, up, down,” Sehler said of the winding course that climbs to the Heart Field, out MGM Trail nearly to the Quarry area before barreling down Upper Meadow. From there, the courses vary depending on age, gender and skill divisions.

Unlike the season’s previous race at Howelsen, which was a dual-lap circuit, this race will feature a single lap for the expert and pro divisions that is just longer than nine miles ...

The organizers behind the Cultural Heritage Walking Tours of Steamboat Springs know how to incorporate two passions of local residents €” exercise and an interest in Yampa Valley history. The tours resume this week, but this year they come in a much bigger package. The Downtown Historic Walking Tour and the Mineral Springs Walking Tour have been offered in past years, but they usually were twice a month. This summer, the tours will be weekly, thanks to a "Preserve America" grant. "One of the things we applied for is to be able to fund additional programming for the community," Tread of Pioneers Museum Executive Director Candice Lombardo said. "Now we have funding to do historical activities four days a week." Mountain Market experienced 39% gain in value over winter

The market for resort condominiums in Steamboat Springs is tight, and there isn't much relief in sight for the next couple of years. Early this month, there were just 56 condominiums listed for sale on the Steamboat Springs Multiple Listing Service. And of those, only 15 were listed at prices less than $500,000. "The inventory is very limited," Realtor Doug Labor said. "Clients come to us and their expectation is that there will be a variety of condos under $500,000 to choose from." Of the 15 below the half-million dollar mark, Labor said four were Walton Village units that comprise less than 1,000 square feet. Another two are new products in the Sunray Meadows development, and a fifth is an older Meadowlark condominium, where covenants forbid nightly rentals. Steamboat Springs €” City officials are ready to once again set regulations for vacation home rentals, an industry that allows short-term vacationers to stay in neighborhood settings but which draws the ire of year-round residents who complain of noise and traffic. The Steamboat Springs City Council on Tuesday will conduct the first reading of its revised vacation home rental ordinance. The public discussion will be the latest round of debate about an issue that in the past year has led to revocation hearings, quasi-judicial proceedings, and a lawsuit filed against the city by homeowners on Ridge Road. In a meeting April 20, the City Council voted to extend a temporary ban on new permits for vacation home rentals through Aug. 7. Steamboat hotel sold to Starwood

Starwood Hotels and Resorts has purchased the Sheraton Steamboat Resort & Conference Center and the Sheraton Golf Course for $58 million, according to sales documents filed in Routt County. White Plains, N.Y.-based Starwood owns or manages 11 properties in Colorado, including the Sheraton Steamboat, the Westin Tabor Center in Denver and the St. Regis Resort in Aspen. Starwood’s corporate spokesman did not return calls for comment Tuesday. The 315-room hotel and the golf course were part of a larger package of Steamboat ski-resort base-village properties that were put up for sale last fall by Ski Time Square Enterprises. Last month, Washington, D.C.-based Cafritz Interests purchased the two other major assets – the Thunderhead Lodge and the Ski Time Square retail space – for a total of roughly $42 million. Cafritz said it plans to raze the buildings to make room for a ski-in, ski-out redevelopment.
