• Rate your home's fire safety today!

  As the winter months approach us it is a great time to review your home's fire safety.  With dropping tempertures the use of space heaters and holiday lights go on the rise so be safe this winter and keep the fire in the pot belly stove! 

  Do I have adequate smoke detectors in my home?
  A smoke alarm is the easiest step you can take to cut the risk of fire. You should have at least one smoke alarm on each floor of your home.

  How good are my electrical devices?
  Are any of your electric wires or cables worn or taped? If so, they aren't safe and should be replaced.

  Is my upholstered furniture fire-resistant?
  If it was made before 1988 then it's probably not fire-resistant, and can catch fire easily. Check the label to be sure.

• Save on Cooling Costs

  Heating and air conditioning usually represent the biggest portion of home energy bills. As we head into the hottest part of the year, here are some ideas from author and home improvement expert Don Vandervort that will help you stay cool...and save money in the long run:

  1. Get 'In the Zone': Creating heating and cooling zones that let parts of your house become warmer and cooler than other parts is a great way to save both energy and money. If your home has a ducted system and wasn't originally designed with a zone system in mind, you can have a professional install a series of motorized dampers in certain ducts that will create a zone effect.
