A smoke alarm is the easiest step you can take to cut the risk of fire. You should have at least one smoke alarm on each floor of your home.

Are any of your electric wires or cables worn or taped? If so, they aren't safe and should be replaced.
Is my upholstered furniture fire-resistant?
If it was made before 1988 then it's probably not fire-resistant, and can catch fire easily. Check the label to be sure.
