Steamboat offers "Bags Fly Free" program

Take off this winter and take everything you need with you to Ski Town, U.S.A. ® as the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation unveils its new Bags Fly Free* program, in conjunction with the resort's Early Rewards package. Now, the only thing you need to make room for is carving up Steamboat's legendary Champagne Powder^TM snow, which last winter resulted in a record-breaking snow season.

Record Snowfall in Steamboat delays Mountain Bike Race

Announcing The Rio Stampede 12 and 6 Hour Endurance Mountain Bike Race Changes Race Date Due To Record Breaking Snowpack.
Come out west and race with us in the Rio Stampede at the Steamboat Ski area. Legendary climbs and aspen-studded single track await you for this test of skill and endurance. Race either 12 or 6 hours with a team or solo. Not in the best of shape, get your work pals together and race in the corporate division.

Due to the record breaking snowfall of 2008, we are postponing the Rio Stampede until Saturday August 9, 2008. This date ensures the epic course and base area you have come to expect from all the Rio events.

The road less traveled - Ft. Collins to Steamboat
The last car passed 30 minutes ago. Since then, the only life along this lonely length of highway has been four-legged or feathered. Even the radio offers nothing but crackling static. In this high chaparral landscape, more suggestive of Outer Mongolia than Colorado, antelope outnumber people. To an urban dweller the sprawling nothingness can be unsettling.
This lonesome stretch of blacktop is the backdoor route to Steamboat Springs. Beginning in Fort Collins, State Highway 14 winds through some of the most diverse geography in the state. It's not the quickest way to Colorado's northernmost ski town, but for wide open spaces and long sightlines, it can't be beat.

Steamboat Snowfall Breaks All the Records!

With more than 40 feet (482") of Champagne Powder® snow this winter, the Steamboat Ski area will finish the 2007/2008 season in record fashion, breaking its previous season snow record of 447.75 inches set in 1996/1997.
"Despite early forecasts calling for a warmer and drier winter, big snows, often the norm in Steamboat, were a common occurrence and provided a season full of epic powder days," said Chris Diamond, president & chief operating officer for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. "Powderhounds will have plenty of powder tales to tell for years or at the very least until the cycle begins again with the opening of the 2008/2009 season on November 26th."

The definition of Steamboat's Champagne Powder Snow

A winter storm dropped a whopping 25 inches of Champagne Powder over Steamboat this past weekend....and I have never been so happy to report on the conditions. I think everyone who went skiing this weekend said, "I have never skied this much snow in my life!" The ski conditions to date are a constant reminder of why Steamboat is Ski Town USA!
For the past 10 days, more than three feet of snow has fallen mid-mountain at the resort and there are with one day of sunshine now under our belt this month, snow is back in the forecast for tonight!

Santa brings deep powder to Ski Town USA!

When I heard the forecast call for 100% chance of snow I knew this would be a good Christmas! With a recent series of storms dropping more than 4 feet of snow in the past week, the Steamboat Ski Resort has surpassed 100 inches of Champagne Powder snow in the month of the December.
With all the family and friends in town for the holidays it was a great time to take a long lunch and test out the conditions. And I am hear to report that every run we took was outstanding! Cruising down the trees along Vagabond offered knee-deep bliss...that made co-workers stare when I returned to the office with an ear-to-ear grin!
The mountain now has 95% of the trails open for pure powder enjoyment!

Snow is falling and most of us are looking forward to starting our favorite winter sports here in Ski Town USA. Whether you ski, ride, or snowshoe, pre-season training is extremely important. Proper physical preparation can mean the difference between your best season ever and the season you spent in rehab. Read these quick tips to enjoy a safe and healthy ski season!

Although each winter sport demands a different level of fitness, there are four key components to any pre-season training program. These are strengthening, stretching, balance work, and cardiovascular training. A comprehensive program that includes all of these components will maximize your performance and greatly reduce your risk for injury.

Tips for Downhill Skiers:
- Strengthen core and quads. A good two-in-one exercise is the wall squat using an exercise ball. ( Pic 1)

New Gondola Planned for 2009!

Wildhorse Meadows has moved forward on the final details of planning a gondola from their multi-phase development to the ski area base. The gondola will carry passengers from the new Trailhead Lodge to an upper terminal near the ski area’s gondola building. Construction on the new gondola will need to run in conjunction with the progress of One Steamboat Place, as the landing terminal will be located in the public plaza, a part of their project.

Construction on the Wildhorse gondola will begin next summer, but it will not operate to the public until the beginning of the 2009–10 ski season. Wildhorse Meadows has entered into an agreement with Leitner-Poma to engineer the gondola.
